PENILE DYSMORPHIC DISORDER AND PEYRONIE’S DISEASE

Penile Dysmorphic Disorder

Penile dysmorphic disorder (PDD), also known as “small-penis syndrome”, is a form of body dysmorphic disorder and for sufferers, the size or shape of the penis is their main, if not their exclusive, preoccupation causing significant distress, shame or handicap. Individuals with PDD have upsetting concerns about their penile size, and they usually exhibit repetitive and compulsive behaviors focused on their penis, like seeking and receiving penile enhancing medical procedures. Individuals with PDD have normal penile size and do not fall into the category of individuals with truly small penis (micropenis) and are more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction, orgasmic dysfunction, and less sexual satisfaction. Individuals who suffer from PDD tend to exhibit low self-esteem and self-confidence and are often worried about their sexual performance. The anxiety and depression associated with PDD often lead to sex avoidance and lack of romantic relationships altogether.

Individuals with PDD may exhibit:

  • Ruminative thoughts and excessive preoccupation about penis size
  • Hyperfocus on the penis
  • Repeated visual scrutiny of the genitals
  • Conflict, shame or guilt around their sexual performance
  • Supposed or real sexual penis dysfunction
  • Sex avoidance
  • Obsession with researching penile enhancement medical procedures and remedies

Penis image perception is an essential component of body image. Ideals of penis size, however, are heavily determined by cultural factors and depictions of penis size in the media. Although PDD is complex, we offer a safe and supportive environment to address PDD and help individuals lead healthy sex lives. Call us today; we can help!

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease (PD) is a noncancerous condition resulting from fibrous scar tissue that develops on the penis and can cause curved and painful erections. Many penises have a normal curvature, which isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. However, individuals with PD may display significant bend or pain  in the penis. PD can make sexual penetration difficult or impossible or might make it difficult to get or maintain an erection (erectile dysfunction). PD may also cause stress and anxiety. Penile shortening and deformity may also be a result of PD. PD rarely goes away on its own and the condition will remain as is or worsen in most individuals. Early treatment soon after developing the condition is important and may prevent it from getting worse or even improve symptoms. Even for those who have had the condition for some time, treatment may help improve bothersome symptoms, such as pain, curvature and penile shortening.

At Texas Sexual Health we manage PD so men can have quality of life and better sexual satisfaction. We develop personalized treatment plans to help men with PD. If you have noticed changes in your penis, don’t wait. The sooner you seek treatment, the better your prospects for a positive outcome so call us today!
