HOW TO TALK ABOUT SEXUAL ISSUES

For most, a sexual mishap will happen throughout the lifespan. Whether it is that you are temporarily experiencing low libido or sex drive due to acute or chronic illness, fatigue, stress or life circumstances, or a decline in sexual function, sex is not a static event that remains the same every day of our lives. Moreover, sexual issues may further cause emotional and mental distress, create issues in relationships and/or have a root in a physiological problem. Regardless of the situation, many avoid having the conversation about sexual health with their romantic and sexual partners or with their healthcare providers. Nonetheless, talking about sex is the main step in ensuring long term positive outcomes.

Why do we avoid the sex conversation

Talking about sexual problems is difficult for many. There are a few reasons why sexual health conversations do not happen with the frequency and naturality that they should, and here are the main ones:

  • Embarrassment: Having a sexual issue creates a lot of embarrassment and shame for many individuals. Since we are not encouraged to talk about sex from the onset, later these conversations can prove to be difficult.
  • Lack of knowledge: Often, not knowing what is happening and why can lead to little understanding about sexual issues or how to address them. Additionally, disinformation and misinformation can delay action.
  • Denial: Negating the facts, even when they are evident, is a strategy often used to deal, or not deal, rather, with sexual issues.

Have a sex conversation with your partner

The longer you delay the conversation, the longer you delay a solution. Therefore, being frank and honest with yourself and your partner is key. Moreover, your partner most likely has already noticed that there is a problem and they are probably blaming themselves for it. Admitting to the problem and openly talking about it can strengthen the relationship and make your partner an ally in addressing the issue.

Seek help

Although google is a great source of information, it does not target treatments based on your unique circumstances. Avoid self-treatment if things continue to progress and get worse. Talking to a professional may save you unnecessary and long suffering and precious time that you can use in having a fulfilling sex life and lead to greater relationship satisfaction. Clinicians are used to having these conversations and if the one you go to does not seem comfortable or knowledgeable to manage the topic, seek specialized care.

Talking about sexual health matters matters. Don’t subject yourself or your partner(s) to unwarranted suffering if sexual issues arise. Take action, commit and see that you get back to enjoying sex again as soon as possible.
